Aerospace Engineering doctoral student Hang Woon Lee has been selected by the American Astronautical Society (AAS) to receive the 2020 John V. Breakwell Award, his second AAS conference paper award this year.

The Breakwell award annually recognizes the excellence of a technical paper or abstract submitted by a student for the AAS/AIAA Astrodynamics Conference, which will be held, virtually, in August. The South Korea native was selected for the award based on his submission "Binary Integer Linear Programming Formulation for Optimal Satellite Constellation Reconfiguration."

As the 2020 winner, Lee will receive a $1,000 travel grant that he will be able to apply to attend future AAS/AIAA Space Flight Mechanics Meetings and Astrodynamics Conferences. Last month, Lee was selected to receive AAS's 2020 Molly K. Macauley Award for his paper, "Regional Constellations as Alternative Business Strategy: Overcoming Startups’ Challenges in the Space-based Communications Industry."

Lee earned his undergraduate degree at MIT and his master's degree at the University of Illinois. He is currently a doctoral student studying under the guidance of Professor Koki Ho, a member of the AE School's Space Systems Design Lab (SSDL) and the head of the Space Systems Optimization Group (SSOG).
