Rotorcraft Scholars Headed to Philadelphia. AE students (l to r) Feyyaz Guner and Aarohi Shah to receive 2019 Vertical Flight Foundation Scholarships.

Two Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering doctoral students have been chosen to receive scholarships from the Vertical Flight Foundation. Aarohi Shah and Feyyaz Guner and 26 other promising vertical flight students from around the world will formally receive the scholarships during next month's Vertical Flight Society’s 75th Annual Forum in Philadelphia.

Shah received the Jing Yen Cost Awareness Scholarship that is awarded to doctoral students who show interest in improving the affordability of rotorcraft. Shah’s submission included her research with Prof. Julian Rimoli on reduced order damage models for fatigue prediction in rotorcraft vehicles.

Shah's research estimates the damage caused by loads, and other fatigue-critical components, and determined approaches to reduce maintenance and component costs, and to ensure pilot safety.

Shah is excited to receive the $6,000 scholarship and is looking forward to presenting at the Forum next month.

“This scholarship helps students, like me, get the opportunity to travel, collaborate, and network with renowned professionals in rotorcraft who attend the Forum every year,” said Shah.

Guner received the Dr. E. Roberts (Bob) Wood Scholarship - named in memory of former Georgia Tech aeromechanics professor Dr. Bob Wood - for his submission on inflow modeling for multi-rotor configurations.

Guner will receive $3,650 to support his doctoral research with Prof. J.V.R Prasad on the interactions, and interferences of multi-rotor configurations to improve the fidelity of flight simulations and pilot safety.

“I’m really appreciative of the fact that they (VFF) consider Ph.D. students for these types of scholarships in the rotorcraft field. It motivates us to continue to pursue a career in rotorcraft,” said Guner.

Georgia Tech mechanical engineering student, Brian Eberle, was awarded the Charles C. Crawford Scholarship, named in memory of the former Georgia Tech student, Army development leader, and GTRI researcher.
