A team of Georgia Tech aerospace engineering students took home the top prize for their work, “Implementation and Verification of a Versatile GN&C and Flight Software Architecture for an Active Control Launch System” at the 2020 AIAA SciTech Forum, held in Orlando, January 6 – 10.
As the number one-ranked paper in the Team Category, their work has been published by the proceedings of the 2020 AIAA SciTech Forum.
Teammates Kunal Gangolli, Athreya Gundamraj, Wyatt Hoppa, and Shrivathsav Seshan - all members of the Yellow Jacket Space Program - were recognized for their work on This is a Test (TIAT) an avionics and guidance, navigation, and controls (GN&C) test-bed launch vehicle for a canard-based active control vehicle. They received a $1,000 first-prize award for their presentation during the AIAA SciTech Forum International Student Conference.
TIAT was designed to make at least four test flights. Each flight aimed to verify and validate the team’s design of flight avionics, software systems, modeling abilities, and the aerodynamics of launch environments.
“It was an insightful experience for us to showcase our results at an international conference and write a published paper,” said Gundamraj, a graduate student working in the Space Systems Design Lab (SSDL) with Prof. E. Glenn Lightsey.
