Rimoli's metamaterial research could lead to a better running shoe

a three-dimensional lattice material that could replace traditional, heavier foams in the soles of shoes.Julian RimoliTheir focus on the architecture of planetary landing vehicles, may have allowed Prof. Julian Rimoli's Computational Solid Mechanics lab to build a better athletic shoe..

This, according to a recently published article in the Wall Street Journal that looks at Rimoli's finding that a lattice-architected material (see model, right) can be 10 times more efficient than traditional foam cores at absorbing impact.
