In this new role, he will oversee and direct the content of the widely acclaimed publication.

Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering (AE) Professor Kyriakos G. Vamvoudakis has been appointed editor-in-chief of the Aerospace Science and Technology Journal, published by Elsevier. The highly-regarded aerospace engineering journal presents peer-reviewed articles regarding aerospace research with topics on the design, control, and manufacturing of aircraft, helicopters, missiles, launchers, and satellites. It offers a platform for researchers to share their findings to advance the field of aerospace engineering.

“Kyriakos’ vision and leadership in the research community make him an excellent selection for this prestigious post,” said AE Chair Mitchell Walker. “I can’t wait to see where he will take the journal in the future.”

In addition to Vamvoudakis’ research, mentoring, and teaching at Georgia Tech, he also serves as the associate editor for several Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) journals including Transactions on Automatic Control, Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems, Transactions on Artificial Intelligence, Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Systems, and Automatica.

“It is an honor to be selected to lead such an outstanding journal. I plan to enhance the ongoing trajectory and continue to publish high-quality research while creating a strong team of senior leaders and associates to contribute,” said Vamvoudakis.

Vamvoudakis is blazing trails in research around reinforcement learning, control theory, game theory, cyber-physical security, bounded rationality, and safe/assured autonomy. The Dutton Ducoffe Endowed Professor joined Georgia Tech in 2018 and hit the ground running. In that year, he received the National Science Foundation Career award and the Department of Defense Minerva Research Initiative award. The following year, he received the Army Research Office Young Investigator Program award. His other awards include, a 2021 Georgia Tech Chapter Sigma Xi Young Faculty Award, the 2016 International Neural Network Society Young Investigator (INNS) Award, the Best Paper Award for Autonomous/Unmanned Vehicles at the 27th Army Science Conference in 2010, and several others. Most recently, he was inducted into the 2024 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics class of Associate Fellows.
