The U.S. News & World Report ranking means AE School ranks # 1 among publicly funded institutions

The graduate program of the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering has once again been named the #2 in the nation, according to the results of the just-released 2018 U.S. News and World Report survey. This is the second year in a row that GT-AE has grabbed the #2 slot - this year, tied with MIT.

“I am particularly proud that we have been able to soar, academically, above the many demands placed on us as a publicly funded institution,” said AE chair Dr. Vigor Yang. “For the faculty, staff, and students whose exceptional talent and dauntless ambitions fuel our work every day, this is confirmation that we are on the right track.  I tip my hat to all of my colleagues at Tech for making the AE School shine.”

The graduate programs of the AE School at Georgia Tech have been rated in the top 10 for more than a decade. Last year, the School’s graduate rankings made an unprecedented jump from #5 to #2. The recent announcement confirms the wisdom of that improved ranking.

The number one spot in aerospace engineering went to Stanford University, while the fourth, and fifth-placed rankings went to CalTech and the University of Michigan respectively.

“The breadth and depth of our graduate programs are a point of pride at Georgia Tech,” said Gary S. May, dean of the College of Engineering. “We strive to be the best in all that we do and these rankings are evidence that our efforts are being noticed. Georgia Tech offers graduate students access to world-class faculty and research facilities and an opportunity to work across disciplines in some very unique and exciting ways, making it an excellent option for the engineers of tomorrow.”

The Institute’s College of Engineering again ranked No. 7, No. 3 among public universities, and all 11 of the programs within the college are ranked in the top 10, including:

  • Industrial Engineering (No. 1)
  • Aerospace Engineering (No. 2)
  • Biomedical and Bioengineering (No. 3)
  • Civil Engineering (No. 2)
  • Environmental Engineering (No. 7)
  • Computer Engineering (No. 5)
  • Electrical Engineering (No. 6)
  • Mechanical Engineering (No. 6)
  • Chemical Engineering (No. 6)
  • Materials Engineering (No. 8)
  • Nuclear Engineering (No. 9)

The  USN&WR rankings are derived from a peer-based rating system that looks at diverse factors, including enrollment, GRE scores, acceptance rate, and research dollars.

As with the 2017 edition, Georgia Tech appears within the Top 10 of all related engineering specialty rankings. The Scheller College of Business full-time MBA program ranked No. 29, up from last year’s rank of 34, and its Production/Operations specialty ranked No. 8. Scheller’s Information Systems specialty ranked No. 10, up from 11 last year.
